Where's the glass?

As in previous summers (2017, and 2018)  we cast our focus a little wider to remind you to watch for glass as you travel outside your usual rambles.

On a recent trip to Victoria BC we spotted this glass dome in the Empress Hotel. Also inside the hotel is a high end Canadian art gallery, Creations, which carries some interesting glass).

We strolled through several galleries in the downtown area including the Westend Gallery which represents several Canadian glass artists.

We also enjoyed visiting Victoria's Craigdarroch Castle where there are 32 period stained glass windows. They are soliciting funds to restore the missing 15.

What about you? Please share your favorite glassy travel photos on our Facebook page.

Start planning your upcoming glass travels:
There's always the big Glass Craft and Bead Expo in Las Vegas NV. It's April 1-5 in 2020.
The Society of American Mosaic Artists gets together May 12th to 17th 2020 in Tucson AZ,

Sooner and closer to home is Refract, a new 4 day celebration of NW Glass October 17-20, 2019. It's being organized by Chihuly Garden and Glass and many others. There are over 55 separate venues between Everett and Tacoma. They've been working hard all summer to display all the info on their website for this huge and hopefully annual event. But they haven't gotten to the "at a glance" version of the schedule yet so I made an unofficial Refract pdf schedule.

If you make it into town for this, please stop and say hello: my studio is site #5 on the GlassAndDecor.com Studio Tour, 1 block west of the zoo.

Travel to classes:
Find an instructor who teaches the technique you want to know. Our Classes/Resources page is a good place to start. Even if an artist's local classes are full you might be able to take a class from them in another state. Note that Bullsesye Glass offers classes in several parts of the country, not just Portland. That the Bay Area has an hour more sunlight in the winter than Seattle be an inducement to climb on a plane.

NEXT ISSUE: "Living with Glass" If you've already taken a great class, help your fellow glass enthusiasts and the instructor by sending us a review and a photo for our next issue.

What's New?

Glass blower Katrina Hude will be on the Whidbey Working Artists studio tour this weekend, August 24-25 (3360 Old County Road, Greenbank) along with several other glass artists. The slower pace and informal setting of a studio tour allows you to talk to the artist and get a better understanding of what went into a piece that catches your eye or that you decide to purchase.
Picture
Cheryl Chapman of Silly Dog Art Glass recently finished "Bearing Flowers. You can see it in person at the Art In The High Desert show this weekend, August 23-25 in Bend Oregon. Cheryl teaches classes all over North America if you want an excuse to travel.

Connie Munford, Windowlit Glass, sent us this example of her new tie-dyed glass. See her and many other glass artists at the Arts In The Garden show in the Bellevue Botanical Garden this weekend, August 24-25

How'd They Do That?

Angie Heinrich of Zetamari Mosaics has just finished making  on-line mosaics class videos. She also gives classes in her Seattle studio and elsewhere. Here's her free tips video on building birdhouses. You can meet her and see her work during the GlassAndDecor.com studio tour October 19-20 at site # 5, Karen Seymour's studio.

Your favorite glassy event isn't here? Send us a note or post it to our moderated Facebook page.
We've simplified the Classes/Resources page. If you offer classes (or want to help someone who does) please see if I have you listed/linked correctly. If you have a specific class coming up please post it to our moderated Facebook page.
You sell/teach glass art and you're not in our Gallery? It's free. Without you and your other glass friends our database isn't nearly as useful to the the Pacific NW glass community. We want a photo of yourself at work for the artist directory and 3 images of your art for the gallery plus a bit more info so prospective buyers, galleries, students, and others can contact you.
