Living With Glass
As cooler temperatures have you spending more time indoors you may notice places glass can be used to make you more comfortable.

Change a view: Customers of Bridget Culligan had a view that had suddenly become much more urban. She designed this window pair that connected thematically with art in their home. The glass helped create one artistic statement throughout the home. The design was inspired by Art Nouveau and Renee Macintosh. Bridget says "I had the pleasure of using handmade glass from the studios of the Fremont Antique Glass Co. It was installed in a way that when the owners decide to move, they can easily take their art with them. I don't know who loves it more, me having the pleasure of designing and constructing these windows or my clients, who get to watch the ever-changing light through this beautiful glass".

Change a surface: glass can be used in many ways to provide a colorful patterned surface that may even transmit light: tabletops, room dividers, sinks... what else can you imagine using glass for in your home? Share it on our Facebook page.
Add Art: A previous issue suggests many types of supports and display structures for glass on a wall or in a room. Adding an understanding of what goes into the creation of each type of glass art may give your collection more direction or suggest how to organize your pieces. Seek out artists and talk to them about their work (see our events list). Maybe take a class (see our Classes/Resources list). Refract, a huge glass event in the Seattle area in October will give opportunities for both (see "Announcements and Events", below).

Add organization: for many of us the topic is living with glass making: How do you find space to work on your projects? How do you store all your materials and tools? What do you do with scraps?
Janiene Knight sends this photo of the baker's rack she got at Second Use to store all her molds, kiln paper and various projects waiting for a full kiln load of a similar firing schedule.

Karen Seymour tumbles small un-fusible scraps to remove sharpness, stores it in clear stackable boxes and donates it to school auction projects once a year. (12 lb. Thumler tumbler, 8 hours with just water, no grit). Fusible scrap makes glass globs for other projects: stack 1, 2, 3 or 4 pieces high, depending on desired glob size, fire to 1500 F for 10 to 20 minutes (Bullseye describes a way to make them fancy). Milo Snyder will be talking about and selling his work at studio #4 of the GlassAndDecor.com tour October 19-20. He takes lost-wax casting to the next level of complexity by 3-d printing his forms.

Rinee Merritt invites you to join her on Saturday, October 12 at the River Gallery in Independence, Oregon from 5pm to 8pm for an art show reception. She'll have her work, including this fish, in the window for the rest of the month.

How'd They Do That?
Paul Desomma, the Glass Eye team and Fremont Mischief Distillery combined forces to make a glass bottle. The auction of the bottle raised $35,000 to benefit the American Parkinson Disease Association Northwest Chapter. The Glass Eye's Hotshop Hootenanny is not officially part of Refract but you can drink Fremont Mischief and watch Glass Eye blowers in action that Friday night, October 18th, 5:30-9:30 pm, tickets $45. Refract is the new 4 day celebration of NW Glass October 17-20, 2019. It's being organized by Chihuly Garden and Glass and many others. There are over 50 separate venues between Everett and Tacoma. Their website displays all the info for each day of each event for this huge and hopefully annual event.

Hands-on: lots of class opportunities if you want to try something new. Be sure to register as the spaces are filling. Tours and Open Studios: Connecting directly with those who make the art is the heart of the event for me. Note that for a couple of the tours you'll need to register and start at a specific time. Our free GlassAndDecor.com studio tour is self-drive and do-it-at-your-own-pace, sometime between 10 am and 5 pm, Saturday and Sunday (and includes some artists in other media). The Refract Open Studios are also free and self-drive but the hours are 11 am to 3 pm unless the studio is also on the GlassAndDecor.com tour. Demos, Talks and Lectures: Some of these have specific times and may require reservations. Note there will also be demos at the Refract Open Studios and on the GlassAndDecor.com studio tour Parties: rub elbows with glass makers and collectors. Some sort of food and/or drink will be served. Most have a cost, some are free but require a reservation. Ongoing Events: if you can't fit it all into 4 days, these events will be around a while. Some have already opened and most are up for at least the rest of the month. "Exhibitions" is nearly identical but includes a few items that are in "Demos, Talks and Lectures" Art Sales: Nearly all the events have art for sale, even those not listed. |

You sell/teach glass art and you're not in our Gallery? It's free. Without you and your other glass friends our database isn't nearly as useful to the the Pacific NW glass community. We want a photo of yourself at work for the artist directory and 3 images of your art for the gallery plus a bit more info so prospective buyers, galleries, students, and others can contact you.
