Lael Bennett explores reactive glass.
Taking advantage of the chemical properties of fusible glass can be a great adventure. After you’ve tried a few combinations you may have an idea of what results to expect but the unexpected can happen too. The magic ingredients are copper, lead, sulfur/selenium and silver foil.

Glass with copper or lead content will react with glass with sulfur or selenium content. The reaction appears as a dark halo where the two ingredients meet. Silver foil reacts to glass with sulfur content. The reaction is seen as a dark halo but depending the kiln environment this halo will spread (fume). Additional firings and slumping can also increase reactions. Specially made "Reactive glass" also reacts with copper-bearing glass and with silver. Reactions are generally related to the amount of copper and silver content, heatwork and surface area contact.
(mouse-over the image above to play it)
Adding to the adventure is that many of the sulfur bearing glass colors "strike": They are not the same color before firing as after and the color may change with more heatwork. For more info on reactive glass take a class from Lael or see Bullseye's "Get a Reaction".

Lael sells her work on etsy and at several local galleries. She is also one of the owners of Glass Expressions in Burien where she teaches classes.

Your favorite glassy event isn't here? Send us a note or post it to our moderated Facebook page.

You sell/teach glass art and you're not in our Gallery? It's free. Without you and your other glass friends our database isn't as nearly useful to the the Pacific NW glass community. We want a photo of yourself at work for the artist directory and 3 images of your art for the gallery plus a bit more info. so prospective buyers, galleries, students etc. can contact you.
